War On Christmas

I grew up with Christmas plays, Christmas carols, Christmas trees and nativity scenes, but it’s a different world for my children. They have winter holiday, holiday plays, holiday trees when allowed, and often no nativity scenes. Even though the federal government made Christmas an official holiday in1870 and over 90% of American’s celebrate Christmas, Christmas has come under attack. Many of the celebrations that I took for granted are not available to my children.

Following are just some of the issues that have come up over the past few years.

Christmas parades are renamed holiday parades.

Cities have forbidden religious displays in public areas meaning that in many instances Nativity scenes are banned on a holiday that is in celebration of the birth of Christ.

Christmas trees are being called holiday trees.

Christmas often isn’t mentioned on public school calendars even when other holidays are correctly referred to.

The great news is that this is an area where the Alliance Defense Fund and others have made a strong stand to protect our rights as Christians. They are available to help advise you of your rights as Christians and to help defend those rights when necessary. According to these organizations, students can sing Christmas carols when the school has a secular purpose for initiating religious expression such as advancing the student’s knowledge of their cultural and religious heritage. The Supreme Court has stated that the “Bible may constitutionally be used in an appropriate study of history, civilization, ethics, comparative religion and the like.” A nativity scene can be displayed for legitimate secular purposes such as to celebrate the holiday or to depict the origins of a holidays.
